Maple Walnut Scones

Our maple scone recipe combines the warmth of maple syrup with the soft crunchy texture of chopped walnuts. They can be enjoyed as a breakfast pastry or a nice addition to your afternoon tea. Making these scones from scratch is surprisingly easy.

The Best Maple and Walnut Scone Recipe

Maple syrup, known for its distinctively sweet and rich flavor, adds just a touch of sweetness to these scones. When combined with chopped walnuts, you get the perfect blend of sweet and nutty goodness. The result is a scone that's not too sugary but still incredibly flavorful. It's like taking a bite out of Fall!

Tools to make the best homemade scones

These are the tools I find are the best and most helpful to make perfect scones. I use them for every recipe.

  • Pastry blender we mention this item with every single recipe because it is THE item that will ensure a fluffy outcome for your scones. You can use 2 knives or your hands, but a pastry blender is best.
  • Parchment paper a baking sheet lined with parchment paper is not only great for non-stick baking, but it is also awesome for easy cleanup! No pan scrubbing is needed!
  • Mixing bowl should be a large mixing bowl if you want to make this a one-bowl recipe! I mix and knead the scone dough right in the large bowl before turning it out onto a floured surface.

Ingredients You'll Need

To make your maple scones, you'll need a few key ingredients:

  • all-purpose flour
  • granulated sugar
  • baking powder
  • salt
  • cold butter
  • walnuts
  • real maple syrup
  • half and half
  • vanilla extract

These ingredients come together to create the perfect scone texture and flavor and you will soon be baking a second batch to have on hand.

How to Make the Scone Dough

Making the scone dough is where the magic begins. Here's how to do it:

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  • Add the cold, cubed butter and use a pastry cutter or two butter table knives to work it into the flour mixture until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Stir in the coarsely chopped walnuts.
  • Add wet ingredients to the dry mixture- half and half, maple syrup, and vanilla extract and gently combine with a wooden spoon or spatula until just incorporated. Be careful not to overmix; you want the dough to be slightly shaggy.

Shaping and Cutting the Scones

  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface and shape it into a circle, about 1 inch thick.
  • Using a sharp knife or a bench scraper, cut the dough into 8 separate wedges. Transfer maple scones to a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Brush the top of each scone with a silicone brush dipped in half and half or cream, then dust each with a small pinch of sugar.

Baking to Golden Perfection

  • Place the scones on the prepared baking sheet, on the middle rack of the oven.
  • Bake for approximately 12-15 minutes, or until the scones are golden brown.
  • Cool on a wire cooling rack.

Maple Glaze

While the scones are cooling, you can prepare a simple maple glaze:

  • In a small bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup of powdered sugar and 2 tablespoons of maple syrup until you achieve a smooth, thick consistency. If you want a stronger maple flavor, add a teaspoon of maple extract.
  • Drizzle the glaze over the cooled scones, allowing it to set for a few minutes.
  • Top maple glaze with finely chopped walnuts for an added crunch.

Serving and Enjoying

Your delicious scones are now ready to be devoured!

  • Maple walnut scones are best enjoyed fresh out of the oven when they are still slightly warm and the glaze is warm too.
  • Pair them with a hot cup of tea, coffee, or even a glass of milk for a tasty snack or Fall brunch.
  • Enjoy with a side of fruit salad.
  • Top with butter, maple butter, or clotted cream.

How to Store Your Maple Walnut Scones

If you happen to have leftovers (which is rare!), here's how to store them:

  • Place the scones in an airtight container or place them on a plate and wrap them in plastic wrap.
  • Store them at room temperature for up to three days. If you want to keep them longer, you can freeze them for up to two months. Make sure to thaw them at room temperature before reheating.

Walnut Maple Scone Variations

While classic maple scone is a good recipe to begin with, you can get creative with variations:

  • Add other nuts like pecans or almonds for a different texture.
  • Fruits like dried cranberries or raisins for a sweet contrast.
  • Experiment with a hint of cinnamon or nutmeg, or cinnamon sugar for a warm, comforting flavor.
